Debate Thread
How does this work? Probably not very well (especially on here,) but lets give it a shot anyway!
Every (insert to be decided/announced interval here) I pick a topic (either of my decision or one someone else suggests THROUGH PM) and either judge, or pick a volunteer to judge (who can't be in the debate, in interest of fairness). Then, people sign up for each side of the topic and defend there side. At the end of the aforementioned interval the judge decides which side did better. Then in the course of(a different (small) interval) we get another judge, sides, and topic.
Will this work? Hopefully. Will it be fun? Hopefully. And will it help people come/stick to this forum? You guessed it, hopefully.
What will the intervals and topic be? We decide the first topic and the intervals here and now....

Re: Debate Thread
good enough
we should re instate it to give fear to the killers of america and also it would clear out prisons of convicted murderers
and on the same idea i feel we should re instate hard labor for prisoners so they earn their keep cuz right now they have a free run free computers, TV, cable, jym, food, and other things most people who are poor dont have

Re: Debate Thread
Looks like I'm on the other side than...
Lets see...
I think that we should not re-instate the death penalty because there is always the chance someone is innocent - When put in prison they can eventually be bailed out or their time could end. However, the death penalty allows neither of these things to happen - Death is death. Solid, unchangable, unending. If they are in prison for a long enough time, the guilty probably will learn their lesson, and the innocent will be able to get out eventually. Killing them will cause two things - the death of someone who currently isn't, but could be, a somewhat positive addition to a community, or the death of someone who did nothing.
As for hard labor, some people could take joy in that - Most people don't take joy in being locked in a cold cell, with fairly poor conditions compared to what they might have outside. If they take joy in it, they are less likely to learn their lesson.

Re: Debate Thread
The 13th amendment abolished unvoluntary labor.
To force them to work could be considered a violation of their rights as citizens of the United States.

Re: Debate Thread
You would have to reduce their jail time then to balance it, which would take too long.
But back to the original topic: The death penalty. After a moment's checking, the U.S actually has the death penalty in some states. Its rare, but legal under some conditions. I think that we should reduce the circumstances that it can be used in, or completely abolish it, because it is irreversible.
